How To Write A Rap Verse

First. We must start by understanding what rap is. So you have to listen to different artist from each generation of hip hop.

Second. Find you favorite rap song and learn all of it’s lyrics by heart. Then you will lip sync along with the song  until it’s exactly matches your lips. The reason for this is to develop the skill rap on beat and understand rhythm.

Third. Find a rap instrumental  you would like to rap to. It’s good to start look for a beat that is medium tempo so that you don’t have to rap faster than you normally talk. This way it sounds natural.

Fourth. Decide what you want to talk about and how you would like to say it. What’s the theme and is it going to be written in first person or third person.

Fifth. Number a sheet  of paper 1 to sixteen vertically. One number for each line. Then you will underline every forth number in the sequence of numbers. He reason for this is to know where you should transition from one set of rhymes to a new set of rhymes that are different from the previous four. This is one of the most simple ways to start.

Sixth. Start writing a sentence for each line while making sure the last word in each sentence rhymes.

Seventh. After completing 16 bars(lines), You will practice saying it along with the beat. While rapping your verse you will adjust how many words need to be taken out or added to make the lyrics match the rhythm of the beat.

Eighth.
Now you can decide how the melody for the verse will sound. This is how you develop what’s called a flow. It’s how the words will be said and how fast. You want to change your flow every  eight lines.  If you want to make it more interesting or appealing I would suggest changing it every four bars but no more than that because it will sound like you don’t know what you’re doing.

Ninth.
Revise your lyrics by making it sound more clever. You can to this by adding similes and metaphors that are relatable to the audience you want to appeal to. Also you want to paint a picture with your words by using descriptive words. This helps the listener visualize what your saying. In the end, you will be developing a skill called lyricism.

Tenth.
review  work  your work and make sure it’s something that makes sense and stays on topic.

Last Tip.
Understand that this is your first verse and the more frequently your practice, the better you will get. Now your verse is complete.
